Airbus A320-232, registered HS-TXT, flies for Thai Smile, the regional subsidiary of Thai Airways International, as part of the carrier's fleet of A320s supporting domestic Thai routes and short-haul regional international connections. Thai Smile was established to serve routes and markets that complemented Thai Airways' mainline operations, offering a hybrid service model between full-service and low-cost carriers. As part of this fleet, HS-TXT supported Thai Smile's role connecting Bangkok to secondary Thai cities and nearby international destinations before the brand's eventual integration back into Thai Airways' core operations.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
