Austria acquired its Leopard 2A4 fleet from surplus Dutch stocks in the 1990s, modernizing its armored capability. The tanks serve with armored units tasked with national defense and rapid response. While not heavily upgraded compared to newer Leopard variants, Austria maintains them with incremental improvements and strong crew training, ensuring effective performance in mountainous environments. One of its tanks, named "Leopardine" features these striking leopard markings.
Common NATO practice is to provide a vehicle snorkel that is wide enough to be a crew escape route. A single long tube is typically fitted to the crew hatch on the turret; the large tube normally brought to the crossing area by supporting vehicles. The Leopard 2 uses a snorkel assembled by stacking shorter rings; the tube's height is limited to about three metres and is mounted on the crew commander's hatch. The Leopard 2 can drive through water 4 meters (13 ft) deep using a snorkel or 1.2 meters (3 ft 11 in) without any preparation.
