During Operation Euphrates Shield in 2016, Turkish Army Leopard 2A4 tanks were deployed along the Syrian border and into northern Syria, especially around Al-Bab. They provided heavy firepower against ISIS positions but faced intense urban combat. Several tanks were destroyed by anti-tank guided missiles, exposing vulnerabilities in side and rear armor. The losses highlighted the risks of using conventional main battle tanks in dense, asymmetric warfare without sufficient infantry support or upgraded protection systems, prompting Turkey to improve tactics and pursue modernization programs.
Common NATO practice is to provide a vehicle snorkel that is wide enough to be a crew escape route. A single long tube is typically fitted to the crew hatch on the turret; the large tube normally brought to the crossing area by supporting vehicles. The Leopard 2 uses a snorkel assembled by stacking shorter rings; the tube's height is limited to about three metres and is mounted on the crew commander's hatch. The Leopard 2 can drive through water 4 meters (13 ft) deep using a snorkel or 1.2 meters (3 ft 11 in) without any preparation.
Deisgned as a main battle tank to replace the Leopard 1, the Leopard 2 first entered service in 1979. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
