The Finnish Defence Forces operates the Leopard 2A4 as a core component of its armored forces. Finland acquired over 100 surplus Leopard 2A4s from Germany in the early 2000s, significantly boosting its defensive capabilities. These tanks are optimized for Finland's challenging terrain, including forests, snow, and marshland, often using camouflage nets and winter paint schemes. While some have been supplemented by newer Leopard 2A6 variants, the 2A4 remains in service for training and reserve units, emphasizing mobility, concealment, and effective use in defensive operations.
Common NATO practice is to provide a vehicle snorkel that is wide enough to be a crew escape route. A single long tube is typically fitted to the crew hatch on the turret; the large tube normally brought to the crossing area by supporting vehicles. The Leopard 2 uses a snorkel assembled by stacking shorter rings; the tube's height is limited to about three metres and is mounted on the crew commander's hatch. The Leopard 2 can drive through water 4 meters (13 ft) deep using a snorkel or 1.2 meters (3 ft 11 in) without any preparation.
