The Leopard 1 entered Belgian Army service in 1969, replacing aging American-built tanks and significantly improving Belgium's armored capabilities during the Cold War. Belgium acquired more than 300 Leopard 1s, which became the backbone of its armored forces assigned to NATO's Northern Army Group in West Germany. Armed with the British-designed 105mm L7 rifled gun, the Leopard 1 emphasized superior mobility and firepower over heavy armor, reflecting the belief that speed and accurate fire were more important than thick protection against modern anti-tank weapons. The tank served for decades before being upgraded to Leopard 1A5 standard, remaining in Belgian service until its retirement in 2014.
Deisgned as a main battle tank to counter Soviet designs, the Leopard first entered service in 1965. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
