The Leopard 1 became the Bundeswehr's primary main battle tank during the late 1960s, with large-scale deliveries well underway by 1969. Developed in West Germany to counter the growing threat posed by Soviet armored forces, the Leopard 1 emphasized mobility, firepower, and battlefield agility over heavy armor. Armed with the proven British-designed 105mm L7 rifled gun and powered by a 830-horsepower diesel engine, it offered excellent speed and cross-country performance. The Leopard 1 equipped numerous Bundeswehr armored battalions and formed the backbone of West Germany's NATO ground forces throughout the Cold War before gradually being replaced by the Leopard 2 during the 1980s.
Deisgned as a main battle tank to counter Soviet designs, the Leopard first entered service in 1965. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
