The M1A2 SEP Abrams is an advanced upgrade of the US Army M1A2 main battle tank, designed to improve combat effectiveness and survivability. SEP stands for System Enhancement Package and focuses on better sensors, armor, and digital systems. The tank is armed with a 120 mm M256 smoothbore cannon capable of firing modern armor piercing and multi purpose ammunition. Protection is provided by composite armor with depleted uranium layers and smoke launchers. Second generation thermal sights give both commander and gunner hunter killer capability. A 1500 horsepower gas turbine engine provides high mobility. General Dynamics delivered the first M1 Abrams to the U.S. Army in 1980. The Abrams is a full tracked, low profile land combat system possessing a high degree of armor protection, lethal firepower, maneuverability and agility. It is built primarily from sturdy rolled homogeneous armor steel plates, sandwiched around thicker protective material. Its four man crew is aided by an array of sensors that constantly monitor the tank's tilt, the turret's motion and any gusts of wind; a computer adjusts the gun accordingly to keep it aimed at its target.
