In 2008, USMC HMM-365 Blue Knights operated the CH-53E Super Stallion in support of combat and expeditionary operations in Afghanistan. The squadron conducted heavy lift missions transporting Marines, vehicles, artillery, ammunition, and supplies to remote forward operating bases. The CH-53E's exceptional payload capacity and long range enabled rapid movement of personnel and equipment across Afghanistan's rugged terrain. Crews also performed casualty evacuation, troop insertion, and logistical resupply missions under challenging conditions. HMM-365's operations demonstrated the Super Stallion's reliability and versatility while providing essential aviation support to Marine Corps and coalition forces throughout the campaign. The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion is a heavy-lift helicopter used by the U.S. Marine Corps for assault support and cargo transport. Introduced in the early 1980s, it features three powerful engines, a seven-blade main rotor, and a distinctive tail rotor canted at 20 degrees for additional lift. Capable of lifting over 30,000 pounds, the CH-53E can carry vehicles, artillery, and troops internally or externally. It has served in multiple combat operations, including Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. This model includes one set of rotor blades and two alternate rotor hubs. One rotor hub has straight arms for attaching the blades in extended (flying) configuration. The other rotor hub has bent arms for attaching the blades in folded (parking) configuration.
