During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, USMC HMH-466 "Wolfpack" played a vital role in providing heavy-lift support with their CH-53E Super Stallions. Deployed to the Persian Gulf region, the squadron transported troops, vehicles, ammunition, and supplies across vast desert terrain, often under threat of enemy fire. Their aircraft supported both the rapid buildup of forces and the subsequent ground assault into Kuwait. HMH-466 enabled forward logistics and troop mobility that were critical to the success of Marine Corps operations. The squadron's performance during Desert Storm demonstrated the strategic value of rotary-wing heavy-lift aviation in high-tempo combat environments.

Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion

The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion is a heavy-lift helicopter used by the U.S. Marine Corps for assault support and cargo transport. Introduced in the early 1980s, it features three powerful engines, a seven-blade main rotor, and a distinctive tail rotor canted at 20 degrees for additional lift. Capable of lifting over 30,000 pounds, the CH-53E can carry vehicles, artillery, and troops internally or externally. It has served in multiple combat operations, including Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Despite its age, the CH-53E remains a critical asset until the full transition to the more modern CH-53K King Stallion is complete.
