During Operation Daguet in 1991, Armee de l'Air Mirage 2000C fighters of EC 2/5 Ile de France deployed to Saudi Arabia as part of France's contribution to the coalition effort during the Gulf War. Operating from Al Ahsa Air Base, the squadron conducted air defense and combat air patrol missions to protect coalition forces and enforce control of regional airspace. The Mirage 2000C's advanced radar and air to air missile capability made it an effective interceptor during the conflict. EC 2/5 maintained a high state of readiness throughout the campaign, supporting coalition operations during the liberation of Kuwait. Designed as a lightweight fighter for the French Air Force, the Dassault Mirage 2000 was first flown on March 10th, 1978. The Mirage 2000 is a fourth generation fighter based on the Mirage III. It has a delta wing, one engine, a dual-intake, and can carry a range of air-to-surface weapons, including laser-guided bombs. Variants include a single-seat or dual-seat version. The dual-seat 2000N is nuclear strike capable, armed with nuclear weapons and equipped with navigation avionics that are capable of handling air-to-ground munitions.
