During the 1967 Six-Day War, the Israeli Air Force's 117th Squadron, known as the "First Jet Squadron," operated the Mirage IIICJ with great effect. Stationed at Ramat David Airbase, the squadron played a crucial role in Operation Focus, the preemptive strike that decimated Arab air forces on the war's first day. Flying sleek, delta-wing Mirages armed with Shafrir missiles and cannons, 117th pilots scored numerous air-to-air kills, securing Israeli air superiority. The Mirage IIICJ's speed, climb rate, and reliability made it ideal for both interception and ground attack. The squadron's wartime performance helped solidify its legendary status in Israeli aviation history. Designed to meet a French government specification for a lightweight, all-weather interceptor, the Dassault Mirage III was first flown on November 17, 1956. This supersonic aircraft has a tailless delta wing configuration and is capable of high speeds (a Mirage IIIA was the first European aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight). It has a provision for a SEPR liquid-fuel rocket engine, which provides additional burst thrust. In production for over a decade, the Mirage III is considered one of Europe's most successful military aircraft designs, serving 20 different nations, some of whom still fly it today. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
