The Shenyang J-16 is a Chinese twin-engine, multi-role strike fighter developed from the J-11 airframe, itself based on the Russian Su-27. Entering service in the mid-2010s, the J-16 is optimized for long-range strike missions and air superiority roles. It features a two-seat cockpit, AESA radar, and compatibility with a wide array of Chinese precision-guided munitions, including anti-ship and air-to-surface missiles. Unlike earlier variants, the J-16 has advanced avionics, electronic warfare capabilities, and improved engines. Some versions, like the J-16D, are dedicated electronic warfare platforms. The J-16 plays a key role in the PLA Air Force's modernization and regional power projection. Designed as two-seat multi-role variant of the Su-27, the Su-30 was first flown (as the Su-27PU) on December 31, 1989. The design grew from a Soviet need for a long-range interceptor based on the Su-27 with the addition of a second pilot and retractable in-flight refuelling probe. Similar to the F-15E Strike Eagle, the Su-30 is still a highly capable Air Superiority Fighter while an advanced avionics suite make it formidable in the Air-to-Ground Strike Fighter role. The Su-30 has spawned numerous sub-variants, including several designed for the export market. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
