Designed as a tactical/strategic airlifter replacement for the C-130 for several NATO countries, the A400M was first flown on December 11th, 2009. Like many Airbus commerical aircraft, the A400M features a full glass cockpit and a fly-by-wire control system with flight envelope protection. The airframe and wings make extensive use of composite materials while the engines turn high-efficiency eight-bladed scimitar propellers. Crewed by two pilots and one loadmaster, the A400M can be configured for cargo transport, troop transport, medical evacuation, aerial refuelling and electronic surveillance. It is capable of lifting close to 30 tons of equipment or 116 fully-equipped troops. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
