The Russian Air Force operates the Ilyushin Il-76, NATO reporting name "Candid," as one of its principal strategic and tactical transport aircraft. Developed during the Soviet era, the Il-76 first flew in 1971 and entered military service in 1974. Its high mounted wing, rugged landing gear, and rear loading ramp allow operations from relatively short or unprepared airfields. Russian Il-76s transport troops, paratroopers, vehicles, weapons, and heavy cargo while also supporting humanitarian and logistical missions. The Il-76 airframe also forms the basis for specialized aircraft including the Il-78 aerial tanker and A-50 airborne early warning aircraft.
