Boeing 767-201(ER), manufacturer serial number 23897, registered N603P and named "Pride of Piedmont," was Piedmont Airlines' first widebody aircraft, delivered in May 1987 and used to launch the carrier's inaugural transatlantic nonstop service between Charlotte and London Gatwick on June 15, 1987. Piedmont's six 767-200ERs, delivered through 1988, gave the previously domestic-focused regional carrier its first international long-haul capability before Piedmont's 1989 merger into USAir, after which N603P was re-registered N645US and continued flying transatlantic routes from USAir's expanded East Coast hub network for over two decades.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
