Boeing 767-222ER, construction number 22815, was delivered to United Airlines as N601UA in 1983 as part of the airline's introduction of widebody twinjets for long-haul routes. The aircraft operated transcontinental flights within the United States and extended international services to Europe and South America. N601UA featured a two class cabin with business and economy seating, reflecting United's early widebody layout standards. Powered by Pratt & Whitney JT9D engines, the 767-200ER provided improved fuel efficiency and range over previous aircraft. N601UA served reliably for decades before being retired, helping United establish its long-haul twinjet operations and expand its global network.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
