McDonnell Douglas DC-9-15 N1070T was delivered to Trans World Airlines on August 19, 1967, joining the carrier's growing fleet of short-haul jets. As one of TWA's early DC-9's, it flew dense domestic routes throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, serving cities across the Midwest and East Coast. The aircraft left TWA in 1981, moving to Midway Airlines and later operating for Great American Airways. Re-registered in Mexico as XA-TJS, it finished its career with AVIACSA. After more than three decades of service, the airframe was withdrawn in the early 2000s, marking the end of a long multicarrier lifespan. Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
