Douglas DC-9-14, registered N9102, flew for West Coast Airlines, the Seattle-based local service carrier and the only jet type West Coast ever operated, seating 75 passengers all-coach. West Coast merged with Bonanza Air Lines and Pacific Air Lines on July 1, 1968, to form Air West, which was renamed Hughes Airwest in 1970 after Howard Hughes acquired the combined carrier, with aircraft like N9102 continuing to serve the merged airline's expanded route network spanning the Pacific Northwest, the desert Southwest, and Mexico. Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
