Boeing 767-3Q8(ER), registered N634TW, flew for Trans World Airlines (TWA) wearing the carrier's final major livery, the "Globe Scheme," introduced in the airline's later years as part of an effort to modernize its image. TWA had pioneered transatlantic twin-engine ETOPS operations with the 767 in 1985, and later-generation 767-300ERs like N634TW supported the carrier's long-haul international network from St. Louis and New York JFK before TWA's 2001 acquisition by American Airlines brought an end to the storied airline's independent history.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
