Boeing 727-251, registered N716RC, flew for Northwest Airlines as part of the carrier's substantial fleet of 727 trijets supporting domestic U.S. routes from Northwest's Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit hubs. Northwest operated one of the larger 727 fleets among American carriers for decades, using the type as a core narrowbody workhorse before the airline's fleet modernization toward Airbus A320-family aircraft and Boeing 757s, part of Northwest's evolution through the 1986 Republic Airlines merger and eventual 2008 merger into Delta Air Lines.
