Boeing 727-214, registered N535PS, flew for Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), the beloved California "Smileliner" carrier, as part of the airline's substantial fleet of 727s supporting PSA's dense intrastate California network connecting Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and other cities. PSA introduced the 727 to modernize beyond its earlier Electra turboprops, and the type became a mainstay of the carrier's rapid growth through the 1970s and early 1980s before PSA's 1988 full merger into USAir ended the airline's beloved 39-year independent history.
