| Macchi M.C.205 Veltro | | 4.75" | | 5.75" | Designed as a high-speed interceptor with a ground-attack capability, the M.C.205 was first flown on April 19th, 1942. The Veltro was a refinement of the M.C.202 Folgore and used a more powerful license-built version of the Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine that powered the German Bf 109. It was fast and maneuverable and was widely regarded as the best Italian aircraft of World War II, more than capable of engaging allied fighters like the P-51 Mustang or attacking allied bomber formations. The complexity of its construction and a lack of manufacturing resources hampered production though, and only 262 examples were eventually built. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
