Douglas DC-2-115-B1334 was assembled by Fokker and delivered to the Spanish Republican government on May 14, 1935. The DC-2 was built as MSN 1330 BV37 and registered as EC-AAY for L.A.P.E. Airlines as flight number 22 and named "Orion" but later changed to "Granada". This was the second DC-2 for L.A.P.E. Lineas Aereas Postales Espanolas (Spanish Postal Airlines) and used to fly mail to France and other destinations.L.A.P.E. was the forerunner to the Spanish national airline Iberia. EC-AAY was written off in March 1937.
