The Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules is one of the most famous military transport aircraft in the world, and today it continues to be used by more than 60 air forces. Indeed, after achieving more than 50 years of continuous service, the C-130 has the longest production run of any military aircraft. There are a number of Hercules models in the Dragon Warbirds range already, but another one has just taken off! It's a 1/400 scale C-130H belonging to the 179th Airlift Wing of the Ohio Air National Guard (ANG). Key improvements incorporated in the C-130H variant are four updated Allison T56-A-15 turboprops, a redesigned outer wing and modernized avionics.
The C-130H remains in widespread US Air Force (USAF) use and the Ohio ANG has long been one such operator. The 179th Airlift Wing is based at Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport, although it has since replaced its C-130H aircraft with the C-27J Spartan that will be able to directly support the US Army. Its Hercules aircraft have been involved in operations all over the world in recent years, and the 1/400 Warbirds model shows one of its aircraft. What impresses most about this C-130H is the outstanding three-color camouflage scheme. Although the model is not large in this scale, all the necessary details are clearly and sharply represented. The camouflage is painted realistically, allowing this Ohio ANG aircraft to take on a whole new character of its own.
Designed to function as a troop, medical evacuation and cargo transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules was first flown on August 23rd, 1954. Built by Lockheed and capable of over 40,000 lbs of payload, this four-engine turboprop aircraft is quite possibly the most versatile tactical transport in existence. Its modern roles include airlift and airdrop, electronic surveillance, search and rescue, space-capsule recovery, helicopter refueling and aerial attack. Capable of takeoffs and landings from unprepared runways, the C-130 has even landed and taken off from a carrier deck without benefit of arresting gear or catapults. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
