Lockheed L-1011-1 TriStar, was registered as CF-TNA (later re-registered C-FTNA) with Air Canada, though the manufacturer serial number for this specific airframe is not confirmed in available public records; a sister Air Canada TriStar, C-FTNG, carried construction number 193E-1067-adjacent serials from the same early-1970s delivery batch. CF-TNA supported Air Canada's domestic Canadian and international TriStar operations during the 1970s and 1980s before the aircraft's eventual transfer to Air Transat as the type aged and was gradually retired from Air Canada's fleet. Air Canada's TriStar fleet represented the carrier's first wide-body aircraft type, introducing significantly greater passenger and cargo capacity to routes across the country, and the eventual transfer of surviving airframes to Air Transat reflected the growing Canadian leisure charter market's appetite for affordable secondhand widebody capacity during the 1990s.

Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the L-1011 was first flown on November 16th, 1970. The general layout and three-engined configuration is very similar to the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, with which the L-1011 was designed to compete. It was the first widebody airliner to receive FAA certification for zero-visibilty autolanding using an Inertial Navigation System based autopilot.
