With a length of 38 cm and a wing span of 34 cm, the C-5, also nicknamed "Lockheed Hilton" for its cavernous cargo hold, possesses considerable dimensions - even in 1/200. Metal landing gear with rubber tires provide a sure standing for this resin-made model. Herpa's second release depicts a C-5A Galaxy of the 436th Airlift Wing from Dover Air Base, Delaware.
Designed to meet a USAF requirement for a heavy logistics transport, the C-5 was first flown on June 30th, 1968. The t-tail configuration provides unobstructed access to the large rear loading ramp which, in combination with the massive hinged nose, allows for "drive-through" loading and unloading of cargo. The C-5 is one of the largest military aircraft ever built and its cavernous cargo compartment measures 121 feet long by 19 feet wide and 13.5 feet high. This is in addition to an upper deck with seating for 73 passengers. Current versions of the aircraft are capable of lifting up to 270,000 lbs of cargo. © Copyright 2003-2021 The Flying Mule, Inc.
