In the 1950s and 1960s, the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) operated the Shenyang J-5, a Chinese-built version of the Soviet MiG-17. The J-5, a subsonic jet fighter, was used primarily for air defense and pilot training. Its simple, robust design allowed the PLAAF to rapidly expand its jet fighter capabilities during the early Cold War era. The J-5 was often equipped with UB-16-57 rocket pods, enhancing its ground-attack capability. The UB-16-57, a 57mm 16-tube rocket launcher, allowed the subsonic fighter to engage enemy armor, troop concentrations, and soft targets with high-volume fire. Mounted under the wings, these pods complemented the J-5's twin 23mm cannons, giving pilots a versatile strike package.
Designed as a Chinese produced version of the MiG-17, the J-5 was first flown on June 19th, 1956. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
